Breakfast at Home
Children start the day with a nourishing breakfast at home. Skipping breakfast or eating insufficiently prevents attentiveness and makes it harder to grasp new concepts.
Recommended Lunch Box Items
• Fresh vegetables and/or fruit
• Sandwiches, rolls, homemade burgers
• Occasionally: home made nuggets and fries (not repeatedly)
• Plain water is preferable to artificially sweetened drinks
Strictly Not Allowed
• Junk food and packaged items: chips, crisps, Pringles, chocolates, chewing gum, sweets, biscuit packets
• Foods with artificial or added red colour
• Cola drinks and artificial juices
• Processed meat: nuggets, sausages, deli meat
• Oily and messy food
• Chicken or fish with bones
• Large pieces of food requiring cutting, noodles, rice, pasta
Pre-School Guidelines
• Food is cut into very small pieces for easy eating with a fork or spoon
• Teachers supervise snack time but do not cut food for each child
• Knives are not recommended in pre-school classes
Snack Time / Break
• Duration: 40 minutes (10 – 15 minutes for snacks, 25 – 30 minutes for outdoor play) • Students eat under teacher supervision
• Contents of lunch boxes are checked
• Proper table manners are encouraged
• All students begin with Bismillah
• At the end, students clean their tables and put away lunch boxes
• Junk food is taken away; classmates share their lunch with the child
• Parents receive reminders through the Homework Diary
Middle School Guidelines (Grades 6–8)
• Students of Grades 6–8 are expected to bring snacks from home. However, they may be allowed to buy snacks from the school canteen once a week according to the following schedule.
o Monday: Grade 6
o Tuesday: Grade 7
o Wednesday: Grade 8A
o Thursday: Grade 8B
o Friday: No canteen access for any grade
• Lunch time takes place in classrooms under teacher supervision
• Teachers monitor eating manners and encourage students to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, just as with junior students
